10 Ways to a Successful Sojourn in Crete PDF Print E-mail
Gerald, of the well known "Brits in Crete" web portal has notched up eight out of his 40 years living outside the UK, in sunny Crete. Here are his 10 suggested ways to succeed in Crete, based on his knowledge:

1.  Get to know Crete first:  It is fundamental to your decision to buy a home here. It is surprising how many don't.

2.  See as much of the island as possible. Do lots of research on the Internet and through visits, preferably for 2 years before your intended move to buy in Crete.

3.  Rent for the first six months of any stay in the area you think you wish to buy a property, to confirm your initial plan.

4.  Always seek professionals' help. Do not try to shortcut, especially the bureaucracy, unless you read and write Greek fluently.

5.  Remember you will always be regarded as a "guest" in Greece, unless you marry into a Cretan/Greek family.

6.  If you are British, try to leave your British ways but not your values, in Britain.  Be flexible and try to become part of the Cretan community in which you have a home. (This also applies to other nationalities to their respective homelands.)

7.  Socialise with neighbours and make friends but guard what you say. Gossip can be overdone. Jealousy is a powerful phenomena both among the expatriate communities and locals, alike.

8.  Crete is a class conscious society.  Cretans are not so amenable to 'poor' looking foreigners.

9.  Look beyond summer. Plan to keep busy during the wintertime, if you intend to stay all year.

10. Be aware that the average span of foreigners residing in Crete is approximately 7 - 10 years. That is good news, while the better news is that property values continue to appreciate.

Gerald Brown, is a long time British expatriate having spent many years in Asia in the broadcasting and media consulting industries, mainly in Hong Kong where he maintains a residence and spends some of his time. When in Crete he is located in Vrahassi, a proud mountain village and the first municipality in Lassithi when you take the main E-75 highway East, from Heraklion Airport.
