My name is Mauro Russo, Italian, born in 1964. After having worked for many years in the fashion industry, first in London as a hairdressing teacher and art director for Vidal Sassoon and then as a photographer for Backstage Agency in Paris. I discovered in Pietrasanta by Massa Carra, as I was on holiday marble sculpting at the Palla Studios where they make copies of all the famous antique sculptures. Being especially fascinated by the one to one with the stone, listening only to the sound of the marble when it's touched by the chisel, I decided to leave the frenetic and most of the time superficial, world of fashion. Once in Italy, sculpting, I was taking drawing classes at the same time and one day my teacher, Claudio, told me that close by in a monastery, they were starting to give classes in icon painting, in the Byzantine technique. I decided to attend the classes run by Suor Donatella and also had the opportunity to see at work a Russian icon restorater from St. Petersberg, called Sacha Stalniov, whenever he was in Italy. I do have to admit that the experience there, whether from the beauty of the technical poit of view, the spiritual approach, the silence, the prayers, the old hymns, the simplicity of the day, the friendships made, the honesty of work was like being hit by the biggest of thunders. Dostoevskij said rightly, 'the beauty of things and nature keeps the human being alive.' Our days having moved recently to the village Lithines, I am preparing to open later this year, an Icon painting studio, giving people the possibility not only to order or buy icons, but also to attend beginners courses in Byzantine iconograpy. In these classes starting towards the beginning of next year for whoever is interested, we will be using the same materials as the old master, with an insight to the symbolism and spirit needed for iconpainting.
