GETTING TO CRETE

There are many ways to travel to Crete and they vary from summer to winter currently.

The easiest way is to fly direct and most companies will fly all summer long.  In the Summer there are many charter flights that fly directly to Heraklion, making the island even more accessible. With the season lasting from April through to October, it creates low cost fares and a choice of services.

In the winter, we fly to Athens which is only a thirty five minute flight and then pick up the other airlines to our individual contries. We do predict that this will eventually change and flights will operate all year round, but it will take a few more years for this to be adopted!

AIRPORTS SERVICES

On Crete there are three main airports. The predominant one is in Heraklion, the Capital, servicing over four million customers per year. Heraklion is approximately one and a half to two hours by car to the south eastern corner of the island. The next largest airport is in Hania.

However, in 2006/7 we will have a new international airport up and running in Sitia, only 35-40 minutes away by car from Makrigialos, which will make this region even more accessible. There is already a small airport at Sitia, mainly flying customers to Athens, but this is expanding and is on schedule for completion next year.

Alternatively you can reach this corner of the island by ferry from Athens. The introduction of low fare flights to Athens throughout the year has made ferry travel even more popular. There are daily services to Heraklion and a twice-weekly service to Sitia from Pireaus. Below are are some flight and ferry links, but for further information click on our useful links page for travel companies and others links.
