Welcome to the March/April 06 newsletter from Cretan-homes. com

Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have wished our elder son well after his recent illness. He is now much better and well on the road to recovery, so thank you all for your good wishes Being ill is always a timely reminder that we are only as good as our health dictates and our thoughts go out to those still coping with bad health.

At Cretan-homes, these months have been hectic with a lot of new and renewed interest in our corner of Crete. Most importantly we have been happy to set up the new Crete Property Association, which is made up from reputable, long standing agents. We believe that this association will help to encourage legal practise and also answer questions in a professional and unbiased manor. So watch out for the site as it goes live at at the end of April.

Once again,Carol Paliodaki from 'living in crete'   updates us with the latest news on the island, especially with news about Olympic Airways new company identity.

Yiannis Samatas, with his great monthly newspaper The Crete Gazette, has some good ideas as to where to go this Easter, so click here to read the latest edition.

Ann Lisney's column this month is all about life in her village and the importance of village inclusion. Read her article below and if you wish to contact Ann, do drop us a mail.

Although we constantly update the web site, we also have many properties not advertised, so keep checking in, or mailing us and as always; any information or comments are very much appreciated!

What's happening in Crete

  • Successor to OA is taking shape 20th March 2006 .Olympic Airlines, Greece’s troubled national carrier, is to be replaced by a completely stripped-down airline which will be called Pantheon Airways, according to a business plan which has been prepared by the government and was seen by Sunday’s Kathimerini. The new carrier will be shorn of all its subsidiaries such as ground handling, and will focus only on actual flights. Pantheon’s first flight is slated for October 26 this year
  • Crete Airport improvements. Chania airport is to be extended, and a study will be carried out throughout 2006. In 2007 the airport will be open 24hours a day and night flights will be allowed. Currently no flights are allowed to land or depart from Chania between midnight and 6a.m.
  • The home of the Great Statesman Eleftherios Venizelos, in Helepa, Chania, is to be turned into a museum. The house was built in 1877 and Venizelos lived at least half of his life there. In 2002 the ‘National Foundation Eleftherios K. Venizelos’ bought the house with the aim of transforming it into a museum. A study of the building has been made and the first estimates of costs is 1,700,000 Euros. One third of this cost has been promised by the Greek Parliament. Much of the original furniture, along with photographs, remain in the house and the Foundation’s goal is to collect, through donations and by buying, artifacts and works of art related to Eleftherios Venizelos and the history of that era.
  • More on the web siteWWW.CRETEFORLIFE.COM.  The charity needs to raise a total 15.000 Euros to be able to bring ten children to Crete, for a holiday next year. These children are from different countries where they are victims of war, chemical or natural disasters. Log onto the site to read more and maybe give a donation.

As always, we look forward to seeing you all here in Makriyialos!
