Welcome to the Jul/Aug 2006 newsletter from Cretan-homes. com
Firstly, we are very happy to say that we will be opening another office in Makrigialos, hopefully by mid August. We will be opposite the butchers in town as well as in the harbour so this should make it very easy to find us!
Please forgive us if the website is slightly slower in being updated but we are in the process of upgrading it , although thus far it has been a pretty easy transition.
These months we feel the summer heat erupting! Summer hit Crete with a bang and we have temperatures soaring every day. Some local news is that Olimpia, from the charity Crete for Life, had her children here from Belarus and they had a ball! Please contact her for more information through her website, details of which are above.
Carol Paliodaki from 'living in crete' updates us with the latest news in Crete. Look below for more details.
Yiannis Samatas, with his great monthly newspaper The Crete Gazette, has some good ideas as to where to go this summer too, so click here to read the latest edition.
Ann Lisney's column this month is all about her so read her article below. If you wish to contact Ann, do drop us a mail.
Although we constantly update the web site, we also have many properties not advertised, so keep checking in, or mailing us and as always; any information or comments are very much appreciated!

What's happening in Crete
- The Inner Cabinet approved the public sector’s new working hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., scheduled to begin September 1. The operating hours will be the same in the summer and winter periods. Some public services, including tax offices, will close their doors to the public earlier, at 2 p.m.
- Tourism Minister Fani Palli-Petralia said “Crete is an ideal destination for all those people who play golf." The minister said that the government is preparing a draft law to help develop the game in Greece. “We have to create golf courses over the next few years because there is great interest and investment opportunities,” Palli-Petralia added.
- Greece has the second-highest number of clean and well-maintained beaches out of the 40 countries rated by the Blue Flag campaign in its annual awards, the results of which were made public yesterday.
Among the Greek islands, Crete was found to have the greatest number of suitable beaches, gaining 92 Blue Flags. Lassithi has been awarded blue flags at 38 beaches, the Prefecture of Hania 21 , Rethymnon prefecture 17 , while Heraklion has 16.
- The number of foreigners living in Greece rose sharply from 1990-2004, according to Eurostat, which said yesterday that 8.1 percent of the population are non-Greeks. The figure in 1990 stood at 1.4 percent. The majority of new residents come from Albania, the EU statistics bureau added, as Greece recorded one of the highest population increases of foreigners in the EU. More than 6 percent rise in 14 years.
As always, we look forward to seeing you all here in
Makriyialos!
Other
News
- As we are founder members for AIPP and work closely with the EEAU and SEK we are very aware of the current trends of many agents to overextend market prices due to current demand; therefore causing an unreal market value to be levied. We try very hard to keep prices to the professionaly, evaluated level; but please bear in mind that this is a rapidly changing market and as such, is constantly open to new market forces. Therefore if you do property price differences, please contact us and ask for confirmation.
- Any suggestions or
advise about our web site or newsletter is always happily
received. E-mail us with
your views.
- Moving or have moved
to Crete and would be interested in writing a monthly column for us? Contact us with details of your column ideas.
