Welcome to the January/February 06 newsletter from Cretan-homes. com

This month we are doing a complete reformatting of our computer system so we ask our customers to bear with us a little! It will help a lot with the web site and the new site we have coming on line in February. Watch out for more details soon. Nevertheless, you can always contact the Cretan-homes office or use the following mobile numbers: 0030 6977 271080 and 0030 6978 777708.

January and February are mixed months with snow, sun and windy days. We have the most amazing rains and then some fantastic weather. Perfect weather for the plants to grow fast, with some lovely new spring flowers coming up. Keeping us up to date is Carol Paliodaki from 'living in crete' who explains about Crete's February festivals and also updates us with the latest news on the island.

Ann Lisney's column this month is all about harvesting oil and the all round importance of the olive trees. Read her article below.

Although we constantly update the web site, we also have many properties not advertised, so keep checking in, or mailing us and as always; any information or comments are very much appreciated!

What's happening in Crete

  • Crete is to have a new airport in the next ten years. According to transport minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis, the new airport, half an hour from Heraklion in Kastelli, will be double the existing Heraklion airport and cost over one billion Euros to build. The airport will then be used for the five million passengers passing through Heraklion every year and as a transport hub.
  • In 2006 Apokries is 12th February to 5th March. The first week of Apokries starts with the opening of the book of Tridion, the three holy sacraments.
  • Winter sales started officially in Greece on the 23rd January and the shops will be offering bargains for the next five weeks. The sales in Greece are monitored by the government, who announce the starting date each year. The Development Ministry said that inspectors will be checking shops to see whether the sales are genuine and to catch retailers using the discounts as an excuse to dump inferior-quality products.
  • Reforms went into action and Greeks can expect to see more reforms being implemented this year, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said in his New Year’s Eve address after saying he was pleased with the structural changes that his government introduced in 2005. “The year 2006 will be a decisive one. It will be a year when changes and reforms will be stepped up.” The ruling conservatives passed legislation to introduce more flexible work hours, reduce the cost of overtime, reform the bank pensions system, extend shopping hours and end jobs for life at public utilities. “
  • It has just been announced that the Greek state owned carrier Olympic Airlines (OA) is set for a re-launch in April 2006, with the majority to be owned by private investors. The airline will keep the word “Olympic” in it’s title and will also keep the five ring logo. Current schedules will remain unchanged until the new schedules are announced in April 2006. Fares for early December with OA from the UK to Crete are just 227 pounds return (Heathrow/Athens/Heraklion return). www.olympicairlines.com
  • More on the web siteWWW.CRETEFORLIFE.COM.  The charity needs to raise a total 15.000 Euros to be able to bring ten children to Crete, for a holiday next year. These children are from different countries where they are victims of war, chemical or natural disasters. Log onto the site to read more and maybe give a donation.

As always, we look forward to seeing you all here in Makriyialos!
