Welcome to the December 05 newsletter from Cretan-homes. com

This month we must remind our customers, that Cretan-homes office will close from the 23rd of December, through to the 5th of January. All inquiries should be addressed to the following mobile numbers: 0030 6977 271080 and 0030 6978 777708.

Christmas is coming and the weather is changing. We are still having mostly sunny days, although it feels a lot colder now! To help us through December, Carol Paliodaki from 'living in crete' explains about Crete's festivals and also updates us with the latest news.

Ann Lisney's column this month is all about Christmas in Crete, which is a different affair in relation to other countries. Read her article below,'Christmas in Crete'.

We thank Julia and Tom Feise for this month's contribution. It seems that December is a month for the cyclamen, amongst other unusual plants. Click here to read their article.

This month we have organised our partnership with an agent outside Lassithi, in Hania. Working together we hope to help more people find their ideal place abroad. Those of you interested in property in west Crete, do contact us and we will pass this on.

Although we constantly update the web site, we also have many properties not advertised, so keep checking in, or mailing us and as always; any information or comments are very much appreciated!

We at Cretan-homes would like to wish all our customers and friends a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

What's happening in Crete

  • In Crete the shops are only just beginning to fill up with Christmas trimmings, lights and decorations.  Most Cretans nowadays decorate Christmas trees in their homes and have an impressive array of lights hung outside on balconies and in gardens. The town streets and villages are also well decorated with Christmas lights.
  • Christmas is celebrated on the 25th December, but Father Christmas doesn’t bring presents for the children until January 1st, St. Basil’s Day  (In Greek - Agios Vassilis = Father Christmas). Christmas Day is also the Name Day of Christos, Chrisoula, and Christina, so many people will be out at Name Day parties on Christmas Day evening.
  • Christmas Bazaar - The Cretan International Community of Chania (CIC) organise a yearly Christmas Bazaar in aid of local Cretan charities. Last year they raised over 10,000 Euros. The bazaar takes place at the Old Customs House in Chania harbour on 3rd and 4th December this year.
  • It has just been announced that the Greek state owned carrier Olympic Airlines (OA) is set for a re-launch in April 2006, with the majority to be owned by private investors. The airline will keep the word “Olympic” in it’s title and will also keep the five ring logo. Current schedules will remain unchanged until the new schedules are announced in April 2006. Fares for early December with OA from the UK to Crete are just 227 pounds return (Heathrow/Athens/Heraklion return). www.olympicairlines.com
  • It’s official! – time consuming red tape in Greece is being reduced says the Interior Ministy. Citizens seeking different state-issued certificates in the last few months have been spared some 70,000 bureaucratic hurdles. In particular KEP offices (Citizens Service Centres) now take the strain out of a lot of procedures.
  • More on the web siteWWW.CRETEFORLIFE.COM.  The charity needs to raise a total 15.000 Euros to be able to bring ten children to Crete, for a holiday next year. These children are from different countries where they are victims of war, chemical or natural disasters. Log onto the site to read more and maybe give a donation.

As always, we look forward to seeing you all here in Makriyialos!
