Ann Lisney's column this month is about how amazing the flora and fauna of Crete are and how we should appreciate the flowers around. Read her column 'Crete's Wild Flowers' below.

This month Carol Palioudaki, gives us more snippets of information on what's happening in Crete in August. See below for details.

What's happening in Crete

  • A very important site has opened in Crete. It is a charitable fund dedicated to raising money to help bring children to Crete for a holiday. These children are from different countries where they are victims of war, chemical or natural disasters. Do log onto the below site to read more and maybe give a donation. WWW.CRETEFORLIFE.COM
  • Fancy seeing Crete by Donkey! A great new site from Alistair and Suzanne. Walks have been designed for people wanting to see more of the area but prefer to be on guided tracks. George the donkey carries the bags, as you walk comfortably through the Anatoli countryside. For more details contact Alistair at alistair@otenet.gr.
  • Also the big Panagia festivals are being celebrated on the 15th of this month. Anyone knowing any married lady called Maria, Mary or Marika, should say Xronia Polla to them. This is the correct way to wish a happy name day. The fifteenth only applies to the Marias' that are married, as the unmarried ladies celebrate on the 21st of November.
  • The new Canadian school has opened in Hania. The Canadian lyceum of Greece has 27 secondary school students and is the only month long summer school where Canadian students can earn credits towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
  •  Update on the airport in Sitia. There were rumours are that there may be flights from a German charter firm Germania, but this was put on hold until the fire and medical services are bettered at the airport. Next year.Click here for our Sitia airport  domestic timetable.

As always, we look forward to seeing you all here in Makriyialos!
